It's our 140th Anniversary!
The congregation of Hazelwood CHristian Church (Disciples of Christ) marked its 140th anniversary on June 27, 2008. That was the date in 1868 when 23 individuals signed the original charter.
Prior to and after that date, those committed Christians had been meeting in various homes. As the number in the group increased, they began meeting in Walling Hall, located on the west side of the square in downtown Muncie.
The first sanctuary was constructed on the northwest corner of Council and Jackson Streets, and it is still standing and being utilized as a church.
When that edifice was out-grown in the 1890's, the congregation built a new sanctuary on the southeast corner of Elm and Jackson Streets. The last physical relocation was to the present site, 1400 W. University, in the 1950's.
Although the congregation has been in three locations, it has had four names: The Christian Church Meeting in Muncie; FIrst Christian Church; Jackson Street Christian Church; and Hazelwood Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
Several items of our congregational history can be seen in the display case in the library area of the church.
